協力空间欣然宣布将于2024年4月20日至6月2日举办展览“张恺童:幻象的幻像”,呈现艺术家张恺童近三年来的绘画创作,其中多幅新作将首次在国内展出。

在柏拉图的“洞穴寓言”中,火光映照下洞穴壁上的影子象征着虚幻的表象世界,而洞穴中的囚徒却将那幻影误认为真实的世界。不无巧合的是,古罗马学者老普林尼亦将绘画的起源归于对心爱之人剪影的描摹。在此种意义上,张恺童的作品可被视为是关于图像本质的图像,是揭示幻象的幻像。

张恺童将来自不同地域和文化的古代图像作为其创作的“原材料”和载体,融入自身对禅宗哲学的体悟,以理性分析的方式探知感性,展开对人类内在世界的关照。对于艺术家而言,我们所感知的世界是囿于个体经验的一种心理投射,而图像亦不过是对人们信以为“实相”的幻象的描画。人类在漫长的文明发展进程中生产出浩瀚纷繁的图像,可任外部世界沧海桑田、斗转星移,所展现出的内在心理状态却仍不过寥寥数种,逃不出那“七情六欲”。而艺术家所关注的并非图像所示之“物象”,而是其背后承载的精神机制。

张恺童选取了能与他产生内心共鸣的历史图像作为创作的出发点——也许是个人经历的缘由,这些图像隐隐流露出对可能降临的恐惧的焦虑。在此基础上,他对这些图像展开再创作,并将这一过程视为对图像的“反图像”,对图像本身的瓦解和消弭。艺术家使用遮挡视线的突兀线条揭露图像作为幻像的实质——就如圣象破坏者一般,为使观者不致被图像魅惑,陷入渐欲迷人眼的能指而忘却其所指向的本质。他通过截取图像将其从原初的语境中抽离出来,使用金色或银色的反光颜料覆盖住画面中展露情绪的部分,它们不作表达,只是反射。他借助交织的网格构建内心空间的“坐标系”,在去中心化的平衡状态中破除“我执”。他在呈现图像的同时亦消解、摧毁了它,在辩证的动态中实现了对图像的“解构”。由此,正如艺术家所谈及的,在其作品中所呈现出的是一种正负抵消的“零”,是止水澄波的精神悬停,是万籁俱寂的虚空。

如此看来,张恺童的创作是对人内在感性状态的理性探求,它是抽象和观念性的;亦是对艺术家个人宇宙观的图解和阐释,其视角是宏大且超越时空的;抑或,心与物、内在与外界本就为一,那是心中的宇宙,正如《坛经》中惠能所云:“非风动,非幡动,仁者心动”。

Double Double Gallery is delighted to announce artist Zhang Kaitong's solo exhibition “Illusions Within Illusions,” from April 20 to June 2, 2024. The show will present the artist's latest paintings over the past three years, among which several new works will be shown to the public for the first time in China.

In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave,” the prisoners in the cave believe the shadows cast on the wall to be reality, which symbolizes humans unaware of them trapped in a world of illusions. Not coincidentally, Pliny the Elder of ancient Rome regarded painting as originating from tracing the silhouette of the loved one under candlelight. In this regard, Zhang Kaitong's works can be seen as images revealing the nature of images, and illusions within illusions.

Kaitong appropriated ancient images from various regions and cultures around the world. Using them as his materials and medium, he incorporated his personal understanding of Zen Buddhist philosophy into his practice, to dive deep into our inner world and explore sensibility through rational analysis. For the artist, the supposed physical world is in fact the world of our perception - a subjective projection based on our beliefs and experiences, and images are mere depictions of illusions that we truly believe to be “real.” During the course of human civilization, people have produced a vast variety of overwhelmingly extensive images. However, despite the vicissitudes of the outside world, the internal mental states have always remained the very few, namely the “seven emotions and six desires.” What interests the artist in these images is not the depicted physical appearances, but rather the spiritual mechanism hidden behind. The artist chose the images that resonated with him emotionally and reworked on them, a process that he called the “anti-image.” Kaitong selected and presented the images while dissolve and destroy them at the same time, deconstructing them in a dynamic dialectics. Thus, as the artist once mentioned, what is shown in his work is a state of “zero” that cancels out the positive and the negative, a spiritual suspension and a silent emptiness.

Kaitong’s works can be seen as a rational journey through human’s sensible world, which in this sense are highly abstract and conceptual. They also serve as an illustration the artist's cosmology, so the perspective is grand and goes beyond space and time. Or, perhaps we could say the spirit and the object, the inner and the external world are united in one, just as what Hui Neng said in The Platform Sutra: “Neither the wind nor the flag is moving. Your minds are moving.”

1991年生于河北沧州,现工作和生活于柏林、雅典与北京。

2014年毕业于河北理工大学平面设计专业;后就读卡塞尔艺术学院,师从艺术家安德里亚·布特纳(Andrea Büttner)与迪克·施密特(Dierk Schmidt),于2024年硕士毕业。张恺童长期在德国柏林、希腊雅典和中国北京三个城市之间辗转生活。这种跨国生活经历逐渐模糊了他对许多事物的界限感。在创作过程中,他保持着规律的阅读和观察习惯,例如按照文化历史的进程来参观美术馆。这种长期的阅读和观察习惯塑造了他更倾向于分析性创作的风格,更注重形式背后的意义与讨论。此外,一段时间内他深受心理疾病困扰,这些经历逐渐引导他的创作方向转向对多元文化、古代艺术、东方哲学以及心理学领域的图像化探索。
