Tong Gallery+Projects is honored to announce that the exhibition No Need to Represent will be open from June 17th (Sat), 2023 to July 22th (Sat), 2023, during which the artists Si-Lis Chang, Celine LIU, Eva Rubinstein, LI Anqi, HOU Shuai, and Vincent Ballard's latest artworks will be presented. 某时刻，某物体发射或反射的光线经捕捉留存于感光介质上，曝光后复现。这与人类通过眼睛捕捉万物类似，只不过光落入视网膜后并非留存在具体的一张相片上，而是进入人类的一段记忆当中，并在回忆时复现。
人类思维的模糊和复杂性，与相纸复现的精确和具体可感，二者之间的矛盾让人着迷。在本次展览的六位艺术家的作品当中，相纸上的影像有的为瞬时的真实记录，或搭建场景有意识地再现，或彻底用技术建模、拼合重构。在AI技术发展热烈的当下，展览无意于将作品以线性的脉络梳理，仅仅将它们都作为人类思考的具体切片，摆放在此空间之中。

At a certain moment, the light emitted or reflected by an object is captured and retained on a photosensitive medium, and then reproduced after exposure. This is similar to how humans capture everything through their eyes, except that when light falls into the retina, it does not reside in a specific photo, but rather enters a segment of human memory and is reproduced during recall.
The contradiction between the fuzziness and complexity of human thinking and the precision and specificity of paper reproduction is fascinating. Among the works of the six artists in this exhibition, some of the images on the photo paper are instantaneous and real records, or consciously reproduced through setting up scenes, or completely modeled, pieced together, and reconstructed using technology. In the current era of rapid development of AI technology, the exhibition has no intention of organizing works in a linear sequence, only placing them as concrete slices of human thinking in this space.

伊娃·鲁宾斯坦
1933年出生于其父钢琴大师阿瑟·鲁宾斯坦前往阿根廷举办音乐会途中，其母亲是安妮拉·鲁宾斯坦。在跟随其父演出旅途中，她在巴黎生活若干年，五岁开始学习芭蕾舞。1939年爆发二战， 随父母移⺠美国。在纽约继续芭蕾生涯，曾参加多个舞台剧演出，剧目包括“戴步克”、“三个姐妹”，和在百老汇首演的“安妮·弗兰克日记”等。上世纪六十年代她开始了摄影生涯，曾与阿巴斯和莫德尔 (Diane Arbus & Lisette Model)共同学习摄影。起初鲁宾斯坦做过一些商业摄影，如报刊杂志、纪实图片、肖像和图片报道等等，后来转向个人摄影创作。自1970年以来，她的作品参加了上百次国际性的个展和群展。她在美国和欧洲创办摄影工作研讨会，出版了三册摄影文献和四篇著作。作品曾被欧洲和美国博物馆广泛收藏。
Eva Rubinstein
Born in Argentina in 1933, to Aniela Mlynarska Rubinstein and husband Arthur, the pianist, during concert tour. Lived in Paris between travels. Began ballet studies with Mathilde Kszesinska at age 5. At outbreak of WW2 in 1939 emigrated to US. Was ballet dancer, then stage actress in New York (“The Dybbuk,” “The Three Sisters,” first production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” on Broadway). In the 60s she became photographer. Studied briefly with Lisette Model and Diane Arbus. Did some commercial work (editorial, documentary, portrait, annual reports) then turned to personal work.. Since 1970 exhibits world-wide, lead workshops in US and Europe. Published 3 limited edition portfolios, 4 monographs. In collections of several major museums in U.S. and Europe.

Hou Shuai often uses digital technology to create a surreal space that is close to the real scale, and audiences need to rely on their own experience to fill the gap between the digital landscape and the real world. 李安琪
1993年出生于西安，目前工作生活与上海。她在艺术摄影与时尚摄影领域之间保持着良好的平衡与融合，鲜明的个人风格也使她在时尚摄影界崭露头角，并擅长在作品中体现时尚摄影语言与电影式的叙事性，以简洁的场景设置穿搭细致的叙事情节和张力。李安琪曾在新西兰奥克兰理工大学进修，并荣获荣誉艺术硕士学位，并在此期间与当地的时装品牌、艺术家、杂志都曾有过深度合作。

Anqi Li (b.1993,Xi’an)
Lives and works in Shanghai. She retains exceptional balance and hybrid between fashion photography and fine art photography. Her distinguished approach has made her come to light in fashion photography. Li deploys the visual language of fashion photography and cinematic narrative in her art creation by applying minimal set-up, but delivers sophisticated scenarios and tension. Anqi Li graduated from Auckland University of Technology with a MA in Art and Design. During her residence in New Zealand, she hand collaborated with multiple fashion brands, artists, and magazines.

1992年出生于北京, 毕业于SFAI旧金山艺术学院艺术摄影专业, 艺术与时尚摄影师、导演。作为编辑曾工作于纽约monrowemagazine时尚与电影杂志，现工作生活于上海。她的艺术作品不限于单一的形式, 媒介服务于思路, 其产出往往结合多远媒介展示, 例如装置, 拼贴, 绘画, 3D…
不同文化与其行为与痕迹影响着人们的沟通行为和方式, 这常常成为常志杰的创作灵感与源泉, 并通过叙事性的情感与抽象夸张的表现形式描绘出独到的画面。不同的文化环境会引导人们着自己特定的交际行为和实践。某些普遍规律或社会实践吸引着艺术家探索自我与其的相似或不同之处。
Si-Lis Chang
Born in Beijing in 1992, Si-Lis Chang graduated from San Francisco Art Institute with a major in Art Photography. Now she is an art and fashion photographer and director, live and work in Shanghai. She used to work for Monrowe Magazine as an editor in New York. Her artistic works don’t want to be limited to a single form. And she believes the medium always serves the ideas. Her output often combines multiple medias, such as installations, collages, paintings, 3D etc.
Different cultures and multiple behaviors and traces often influence people's communication and reaction, which also become the inspiration and source of Si-Lis Chang’s creation. Through narrative and abstract methods and exaggerated forms of expression, she depicts her unique artistic visual images.Different cultural environments will guide people towards their specific communication behaviors and practices. Some universal laws or social practices attract artist to explore her similarities or differences with herself.
