In the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary art, symbolism is a powerful language often adopted by artists to express complex concepts, concerns, hopes and desires through images that transcend the limitation of verbal expression and material perception. The solo exhibition “Vanishing Boundaries” of internationally acclaimed artist Cai Zhisong’s Oriental Aesthetics Series Exhibition explores the way the artist makes use of symbols, allegories and metaphors to convey meanings other than the literal and to establish a bridge between the seen and the unseen.

The works of Cai Zhisong reflect the fascination of the artist for ancient times, classical Chinese culture and traditional values. His source of inspiration stems from the reinterpretation of traditional spirit, from the exploration of philosophical principles and from his concern for nature and human suffering. His works, imbued with cultural specificity, reflect the willingness to rediscover Chinese traditional culture and reinterpret it through the language of contemporary art with the aim to explore anthropological roots, cultural origins, collective history and identity. They represent archetypes to express emotions and thoughts, while also addressing existential issues related to life, death, time, pain.
On the one hand, to shape his visual vocabulary, the artist draws from history and ancient philosophy, creating poetic, sophisticated and mysterious works imbued with nostalgic and melancholic tones; on the other hand, his rediscovery of the past and of traditional culture can be seen as a conceptual operation to explore human nature at a universal dimension and to highlight the relevance of ancient culture and its related set of eternal values to contemporary context. By revisiting historical symbols, Cai Zhisong highlights the continuity of human experience and the timeless nature of certain themes.
